A private Learjet 60 travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas crashed onto a Florida highway and exploded. Investigators are examining weather conditions and other possible factors behind the disaster.
Nine people died after a private Learjet 60 crashed in Florida on Sunday, November 1. The victims included Texas tech entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife, Helen Sharp, their two young children and five other people.
The aircraft was travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it plunged towards the ground near Greenacres in Palm Beach County. It struck the area near a busy roadway and burst into flames.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash.
Adam Robinson and His Family Among the Victims
Adam Robinson, a technology entrepreneur from Austin, was travelling with his wife, Helen Sharp, and their children, Emma, aged four, and Charlie, aged two.
The families of the victims confirmed their deaths in a joint statement. They described Robinson and Sharp as devoted parents and said their children were the centre of their lives.
Robinson founded and led several technology businesses, including Retention.com and RB2B. Meanwhile, Sharp had worked in public relations and also pursued her interest in ceramics.
Friends and Children’s Caregiver Also Killed
Three other passengers also lost their lives in the crash. They were identified as Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr and Anita Maria Cetina.
Reed and Fehr were friends of the family. Cetina cared for the couple’s children and was described by relatives as an important part of the family.
The aircraft also carried two pilots, bringing the total number of people on board to nine.
Two Pilots Identified
The pilot was identified as Jeff Gregory, while the co-pilot was identified as 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras.
Filgueiras had earned her pilot’s licence while still in high school and had logged more than 1,300 hours of flight time, according to reports.
Her family confirmed her death. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman also urged people not to speculate about her role in the accident, saying she was carrying out her duties and communicating with air traffic control.
NTSB Examines Weather and Possible Aircraft Breakup
Investigators are examining the aircraft’s final moments, including reports of icing, turbulence and precipitation.
According to information shared by the NTSB, the crew reported light icing and moderate turbulence shortly before the crash. The pilots later requested a higher altitude as the aircraft encountered precipitation.
However, the situation deteriorated rapidly. One of the pilots issued a mayday call and reported an extremely rapid descent shortly before the aircraft hit the ground.
NTSB officials have also said there is some evidence that the aircraft may have started breaking apart before impact. Investigators are working to recover and examine the wreckage.
The agency has stressed that it is too early to determine the probable cause. Therefore, no conclusion has been reached about whether weather, mechanical problems, pilot actions or another factor contributed to the disaster.
Investigation Continues
The NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration are examining the crash site and collecting evidence. Investigators are also reviewing available flight information and communications.
Meanwhile, authorities have asked witnesses and anyone with relevant footage to share it with investigators. The investigation is expected to take time as officials work to establish what happened during the aircraft’s final minutes.
For now, the families of all nine victims are mourning a tragedy that claimed the lives of an entire young family, their friends and the flight crew.
