Tragic Stampede at Kolkata’s Chorbagan Durga Puja Pandal Leaves 19 Dead and 25 Injured; 7 Arrested

A devastating stampede at the iconic Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata claimed the lives of at least 19 people and left around 25 others critically injured on Saturday evening, October 17. The catastrophe unfolded amid heavy rains and massive festive crowds when a portion of the temporary structure collapsed under intense crowd pressure around 7:40 PM, triggering widespread panic and a fatal rush toward the exits.

Police authorities initiated prompt legal action, arresting seven individuals, including key members of the organizing committee. Eyewitness accounts indicated that extremely narrow entry and exit points, coupled with inadequate lighting arrangements, severely compromised crowd control and turned the site into a bottleneck. Several devotees lost consciousness after being crushed under the surge.

Teams from the Kolkata Police, Fire and Emergency Services, and Disaster Management rushed to the venue to conduct rescue operations. The injured were transported to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (MCH) for urgent medical care, and the pandal premises were subsequently sealed off for visitors.

Following the disaster, all executive members of the Chorbagan Durga Puja Committee, including General Secretary Jayanta Banerjee, tendered their resignations. Notably, the committee was observing its 91st anniversary this year under the theme ‘AROB’—symbolizing tranquility and silence away from noise.

The tragedy prompted high-level administrative and political reactions across the state and the center. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, accompanied by Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal, visited the injured at the hospital and announced the formation of a judicial fact-finding inquiry committee headed by a sitting High Court judge. The state government announced a financial compensation of ₹25 lakh each along with government employment for the next of kin of the deceased, alongside ₹5 lakh and free medical treatment for those injured. Concurrently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared an ex-gratia grant from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) of ₹2 lakh for the kin of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for the injured. A dedicated toll-free helpline (18003455678) has been activated by the state to assist affected families.

Expressing deep grief over the loss of lives, Union Home Minister Amit Shah postponed his scheduled official engagements in West Bengal for Sunday to visit the hospital and review the condition of the injured. President Droupadi Murmu, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also conveyed their heartfelt condolences.

Meanwhile, the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) mounted a sharp political attack on the administration, alleging gross lapses including shortages of police personnel, civic volunteers, and ambulances at the site, while demanding Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s resignation.
