Jewar Airport Renaming: UP Cabinet Approves Narendra Modi International Airport Name

Jewar Airport Renaming: UP Cabinet Approves Narendra Modi International Airport Name

Uttar Pradesh has taken a step towards renaming Noida International Airport in Jewar. On Friday, October 9, 2026, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the state Cabinet’s approval of the proposal.

Under the proposal, the airport will become Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. The Chief Minister also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his contribution to the project.

However, the Cabinet’s approval may not complete the formal renaming process. The authorities may need further approvals and official notifications before the new name takes effect.

Why Is Jewar Airport Important?

Jewar Airport sits in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. It aims to improve air connectivity for Noida, Greater Noida and the wider National Capital Region (NCR).

Moreover, the airport could ease pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Better connectivity may also support tourism, business travel and cargo operations.

The airport’s location near the Yamuna Expressway offers road access to several areas of western Uttar Pradesh. As a result, the project could attract investment and create opportunities in logistics, hospitality and other industries.

Airport Operations Have Begun

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport on March 28, 2026. Later, an IndiGo aircraft arriving from Lucknow made the airport’s first landing on June 15, according to reports.

The airport aims to become a major transport hub. Its long-term development plans include greater passenger capacity and cargo facilities.

Furthermore, these facilities could strengthen the region’s transport network. However, the airport’s long-term impact will depend on expansion, airline services and supporting infrastructure.

What Does the Name Change Mean for Travellers?

For now, travellers should follow official airport and airline updates. Once the authorities complete the renaming process, they can update airport signs, websites and travel information.

Meanwhile, passengers should check their booking details and airline communications before travelling. They should not assume that every travel document or digital platform already reflects the proposed name.

What Happens Next?

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the proposal to use the name Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. However, the authorities must complete any remaining formal procedures before the new name becomes official.

After the process concludes, the relevant authorities can update official records and public communications.

Overall, the Jewar airport renaming proposal marks an important development in Uttar Pradesh’s aviation plans. As the airport expands, it could improve regional connectivity and support economic activity.
