A tragic incident unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district after a young man, identified as Mohit Verma, was found hanging from a jackfruit tree behind his girlfriend’s house on Tuesday morning. Before his death, Mohit recorded a video late Monday night, explicitly alleging severe harassment by his girlfriend’s parents, brother, and two maternal uncles. While the circumstances point toward suicide, the victim’s father has filed a police complaint alleging that his son was murdered and subsequently hanged to cover up the crime.
Mohit, who worked at a dental clinic and lived in a rented room in Fatehpur town, recorded the distressing video expressing his intent to end his life. He shared the clip with the local village head, Ramakant Verma, and his family members, and also uploaded it to social media. Upon seeing the video late at night, the village head immediately alerted Mohit’s family. Despite frantic attempts to contact him, his phone remained unreachable, and a search was initiated. His body was discovered the following morning on the border of a village under the Mohammadpur Khala police station limits. Initially, the police response was delayed due to a jurisdictional dispute between the Mohammadpur Khala and Fatehpur police stations. Ultimately, the Fatehpur police took custody of the body and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
Local reports indicate that Mohit and the young woman had been in a long-term relationship. Approximately a month prior to this incident, a dispute between the two families was resolved through a formal compromise at the Fatehpur police station, amid unconfirmed rumors that the girl’s family had demanded a large sum of money. The tension reportedly peaked as the girlfriend’s engagement (god bharai) ceremony was scheduled for Tuesday, with her family actively preparing for the event. Concurrently, Mohit had skipped a family function (mundan) at his own home on Monday to stay in his rented room.
Vimlesh Verma, the deceased’s father, has submitted a formal written complaint to the Fatehpur police, accusing the girl’s family of orchestrating a premeditated murder. Circle Officer (CO) Shakti Singh confirmed that law enforcement is conducting a comprehensive investigation covering all possible angles. Authorities are meticulously analyzing the digital evidence, including the viral video and the victim’s mobile phone records, to determine the exact sequence of events before taking further legal action.
