This crucial discovery was made during intensive geological surveys and exploration at the ‘Jabal Sayid’ project in Medina. Finding such massive reserves of highly concentrated uranium and heavy elements in one of Islam’s holiest cities represents a monumental strategic and economic achievement for the Kingdom.
This massive discovery comes at a time when the entire Middle East is navigating deep geopolitical crises and instability. On one hand, active Houthi rebels in Yemen have disrupted maritime routes in the Red Sea; on the other, Saudi Arabia faces opposition from Iran due to the presence of American bases on its soil. The US and Israel have long been trying to curb Iran’s nuclear program, impacting peace across the entire region. Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia has continuously sought to balance the growing influence of Shia-majority Iran. In this highly volatile environment, the discovery of a vast domestic uranium reserve provides Saudi Arabia with newfound strength and a significant strategic edge.
The unearthing of these uranium and rare earth mineral reserves is a key component of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious ‘Vision 2030’. The Arab world’s largest economy is now rapidly moving away from its sheer dependency on oil, pivoting toward a diverse array of energy and mineral resources. The significance of this discovery is further multiplied by a recent major agreement between Saudi Arabia and the United States to develop a civilian nuclear program. In July, both nations signed a bilateral security agreement, considered the foundation of a multi-billion-dollar partnership that will span decades. Under this historic pact, American companies will provide technical assistance to help Saudi Arabia establish its own civil nuclear energy program.
