The Haryana Police have arrested a YouTuber from Palwal, on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and sharing sensitive information. The man, identified as Wasim Akram, a resident of Kot village in the Hathin subdivision, ran a YouTube channel about Mewat’s history and culture and assisted his father at a local hospital.
The arrest was made by the Palwal Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) under PSI Deepak Gulia’s supervision after inputs were received from Taufiq, another accused arrested earlier on September 26 from Alimev village for similar charges. During interrogation, Taufiq revealed Akram’s alleged involvement, leading to his capture.
Alleged ISI Links
Investigations suggest Akram first came into contact with Pakistani agents in 2021 while applying for a visa. He reportedly established links with a person named Danish, associated with the Pakistani High Commission, and maintained contact through WhatsApp and internet-calling apps. Police believe Akram regularly exchanged sensitive information and even supplied SIM cards in Delhi to aid cross-border networks.
Digital Evidence
A search of Akram’s phone revealed incriminating WhatsApp messages, some deleted. Cyber experts are currently retrieving the erased data to determine the extent of information shared with Pakistani operatives over the past four years.
Family’s Response
Akram’s family denied any wrongdoing, claiming he never traveled to Pakistan and was only engaged in his YouTube activities and family medical practice. Police, however, assert that both interrogation records and digital evidence indicate strong ISI connections.
Links to Prior Arrest
This case is connected to Taufiq’s detention, also from Palwal, who is accused of channeling intelligence to Pakistan since 2022. Both individuals are now facing sedition charges and offences under national security laws, with their custody extended for further questioning.
Ongoing Investigation
Superintendent of Police Varun Singla has tasked the Palwal Crime Branch and allied units with a deeper probe. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is also assisting in the investigation. Authorities warned that more arrests could follow as the alleged espionage network is uncovered.
