Political activities are heating up in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Recent actions by Dr. Sanjay Nishad, a cabinet minister in the Yogi Adityanath government and chief of the Nishad Party, have sparked widespread speculation. On Monday, his sudden meeting with senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and Leader of the Opposition, Mata Prasad Pandey, created a significant buzz in political circles.
Although Nishad dismissed the interaction as a mere “courtesy call” to check on Pandey’s health, political motives are being heavily drawn from it. Nishad himself acknowledged that when two politicians meet, political discussions naturally occur.
The Gonda Murder Case and Community Demands
The timing of this meeting is critical, coming on the heels of the recent murder of Nishad Party worker and businessman Vinod Sahni in Gonda. Nishad has adopted a tough stance against his own government over this incident. Accusing the police administration of negligence, he recently staged a protest at KGMU Hospital in Lucknow. He has demanded extreme measures against the accused, advocating for police “encounters” and “bulldozer” action on their properties.
Furthermore, Nishad has been persistently demanding Scheduled Caste (SC) status and a 9% reservation for his community. He claims to have already discussed these pressing issues with the top BJP leadership, including the Union Home Minister.
Mounting Pressure on BJP and Future Strategies
Political analysts interpret this meeting with the SP leader as a strategic pressure tactic designed to secure a larger seat share from the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections. Nishad recently stated that his party would stake claims on seats the BJP lost in the previous elections, asserting that the Nishad Party can guarantee victories in those specific constituencies.
He has made it unequivocally clear that if the BJP ignores his community’s demands, he remains open to exploring other political alternatives. He pointedly recalled that he joined the BJP alliance only after the SP closed its doors on him, warning that he could rethink his strategy if the BJP acts similarly.
Emerging Challenges
Adding to the political friction, Mukesh Sahani, leader of Bihar’s Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), is actively attempting to make inroads among the Nishad community in UP. This external entry poses a fresh challenge for the Nishad Party’s vote bank.
