In the Bareilly unrest case, the main accused, Maulana Tauqeer Raza, will remain in Fatehgarh Central Jail. The court has extended his judicial custody until November 11. He faces charges in 11 related cases.
Maulana Tauqeer Raza, head of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, continues to face challenges from the September 26 unrest in Bareilly. On Tuesday, courts, including the CJM court, heard 11 cases against him via video conferencing from jail. His associates were brought from Bareilly Jail for in-person hearings.
The court ordered custody extension for all until November 11. Police argued that bail could hinder investigations, as investigators have not yet recorded his statements in all cases. Defense lawyers cited health issues and requested his release from jail.
Statements recorded in five cases
Investigators from Kotwali have already recorded Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s statements in five cases at Fatehgarh Jail. The sixth case’s statement is due in two days. Two investigators returned on Monday after recording. Now, Station House Officer Gaurav Atri will visit for the next one. CO First Ashutosh Shivam said this process will continue.
The unrest on September 26
On September 26, a crowd gathered in support of “I Love Muhammad” following Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s call. Police claim the mob damaged shops and vehicles. To control it, they used lathi charges and tear gas shells. Officials report 22 policemen were injured. Post-unrest, police filed 11 FIRs across stations, naming Maulana Tauqeer in all.
