A devastating cloudburst triggered by intense rainfall late Monday night in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, has left two people missing while causing significant destruction, including the washing away of cars, shops, and damage to houses and infrastructure. The incident, which occurred in the Sahastradhara area around 11:30 PM on September 15, 2025, led to flash floods that submerged homes, roads, and even the IT Park, prompting immediate rescue operations.
The sudden downpour caused the Sahastradhara and Tamsa rivers to swell, flooding the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple courtyard—though the sanctum sanctorum remained unaffected—and bringing debris into the main market, which damaged hotels and shops. Over 100 locals were initially trapped but were rescued by villagers before official teams arrived. The floods also triggered landslides, closing several key roads and disrupting connectivity in the region.
In response, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Public Works Department (PWD), and police were swiftly deployed to the site, equipped with bulldozers to clear debris and conduct search operations for the two missing individuals. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated he is personally monitoring the situation and in constant contact with local authorities, directing them to expedite rescues. District Magistrate Savin Bansal and other officials visited the affected areas to assess the damage.
As a precaution amid the ongoing heavy rains, all schools from Class 1 to 12 in Dehradun have been closed for the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for Dehradun, Champawat, Bageshwar, and Nainital districts, warning of potential further cloudbursts and flash floods.
