Lucknow:
The monsoon is set to gain momentum across Uttar Pradesh in the coming 48 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. This weather system has shifted the eastern end of the monsoon trough further south, triggering a fresh spell of showers across the state.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected in most parts of the state, accompanied by isolated heavy to very heavy downpours, especially in the northern districts.
Orange Alert for Northern UP Districts
The IMD has issued an orange alert for several districts in northern Uttar Pradesh, where heavy rainfall is anticipated. The affected districts include:
- Bareilly
- Pilibhit
- Shahjahanpur
- Lakhimpur
- Sitapur
- Bahraich
- Shravasti
- Gonda
- Balrampur
- Siddharthnagar
- Maharajganj
Rain, Thunderstorms Likely Across Western and Eastern UP
The weather department has also predicted rain or thundershowers at most locations in western Uttar Pradesh and at scattered places in the eastern region on Wednesday and Thursday. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected at isolated spots.
Rainfall intensity and spread are likely to subside starting August 15, the IMD added.
Cooler Weather Brings Relief From Heat
Wednesday’s rainfall offered much-needed relief from the persistent heat across many parts of the state. Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4°C and a minimum of 28.2°C, along with 0.2 mm of rainfall.
Among other cities, Agra recorded the highest rainfall at 14.4 mm, followed by Orai (12.4 mm), Varanasi (10.2 mm), and Basti (10 mm).
Rainfall Surplus This Season
As of August 12, Uttar Pradesh has received 496.2 mm of rainfall this monsoon season — 8% above the normal average of 459.3 mm.
- Eastern UP: 468.3 mm rainfall (4% below normal)
- Western UP: 536.1 mm rainfall (28% above normal)
Flood Situation in Several Districts
Despite the surplus rainfall benefiting many regions, 41 tehsils across 21 districts are currently experiencing flooding, affecting an estimated 1.86 lakh people, according to state officials. In response, the government has established over 1,100 flood outposts to aid those impacted.
