UP’s Ghosi Seat Falls Vacant, By-Election Mandatory Within Six Months

The political scene in Uttar Pradesh has changed again. The Ghosi Assembly seat in Mau district has fallen vacant after the death of Samajwadi Party MLA Sudhakar Singh on 20 November. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly Secretariat has released a notification and informed the Governor, Chief Minister, District Magistrate of Mau, Chief Electoral Officer, and all related departments. The Election Commission will now conduct a by-election within six months, as the rules prescribe.

Sudhakar Singh won the Ghosi seat in the 2023 by-election. He defeated BJP candidate Dara Singh Chauhan by almost 50,000 votes. His massive win gave the Samajwadi Party a strong boost in eastern UP and created a major setback for the BJP. Singh remained one of the most active voices from the region until he died due to illness last week.

The Ghosi Assembly seat has seen many political turns in recent years. In 2022, Dara Singh Chauhan won the seat after he left the Samajwadi Party and joined the BJP. However, he resigned from the seat within a year and returned to the BJP again. His resignation triggered the 2023 by-election, where the SP made a strong comeback through Sudhakar Singh.

Now the seat stands empty again. The Election Commission will announce the schedule soon. The by-election will take place before June 2025. Political experts expect another intense contest between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party. Both parties plan to treat this election as a prestige battle before the 2027 UP Assembly elections.

Ghosi has stayed in the spotlight due to frequent political changes. The upcoming by-election will decide the region’s new political direction. With both major parties preparing their strategies early, voters in Ghosi will see a heated campaign once again.
