New Delhi, November 2025 — The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has directed central agencies and the Delhi administration to intensify action against highly polluting vehicles as the Capital continues to struggle with hazardous air quality. The move comes amid rising public concern over toxic smog and repeated violations of emission norms.
The PMO has asked enforcement teams to strictly target older diesel vehicles, non-compliant commercial fleets, and high-emission transport units, especially in pollution hotspots across Delhi-NCR. Sources said daily monitoring, challans, and on-ground inspections will now be significantly increased.
Eco-Friendly Shift: PMO Pushes for Rapid EV Adoption
Alongside the crackdown, the government has instructed agencies to speed up the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in Delhi. This includes:
- Fast-tracking installation of new EV charging stations
- Encouraging last-mile delivery companies to transition to EVs
- Offering additional incentives for e-rickshaws, taxis, and commercial vehicles
- Strengthening battery-swapping networks
Officials say the goal is to reduce pollution from the transport sector, which contributes nearly 40% of PM2.5 emissions during peak winter months.
Delhi Government Welcomes Move
The Delhi government has supported the PMO’s directive, saying coordinated action is essential to tackle recurring pollution spikes. Officials have also requested more central support for:
- Green public transport
- Electric bus deployment
- Scrappage of old vehicles
Citizens Urged to Cooperate
Authorities have appealed to residents to avoid using old diesel vehicles and shift to electric or CNG alternatives wherever possible.
