A special tribunal in Dhaka has handed down a death sentence to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, holding her directly responsible for the violent suppression of the 2024 student-led uprising that ended her 15-year rule. The International Crimes Tribunal convicted the 78-year-old Awami League leader on three counts: inciting violence, ordering the killing of protesters, and failing to stop widespread atrocities committed by security forces under her command.
The verdict was delivered after a months-long trial conducted without Hasina’s participation, as she has lived in exile in New Delhi since fleeing Bangladesh on 5 August 2024. Prosecutors described her as the “chief architect” of a brutal crackdown that claimed hundreds of lives and ultimately triggered her government’s collapse.
