Criminal Netas Bill: PM Stresses Leaders Behind Bars Shouldn’t Control Politics

PM Modi in Bihar: Pushes ‘Criminal Netas’ Bill, Says No One Should Give Orders from Jail

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to election-bound Bihar on Friday, sharpened his attack on opposition parties, asserting that “no one can give orders from jail.” Backing a proposed bill to bar candidates with criminal backgrounds from contesting elections, the PM accused rival parties of reducing Bihar’s people to a “vote bank” while ignoring their dignity, aspirations, and development.

Recalling what he termed the “lantern era” of the RJD’s rule, PM Modi alleged the party had pushed Bihar into darkness, lawlessness, and backwardness. Drawing a comparison with government service, he said:
“If a government employee is imprisoned for 50 hours, he automatically loses his job. But a CM, a Minister, or even a PM can stay in government from jail. Some time ago, we saw how files were being signed from jail and orders were issued. If leaders have such an attitude, how can we fight corruption?”

The PM added that the NDA has enacted a law against corruption which also applies to the Prime Minister.

Development Push in Bihar

PM Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth over ₹13,000 crore across key sectors including power, health, roads, urban development, and water supply. Major projects included:

  • A 660 MW thermal power plant in Buxar (₹6,880 crore)
  • The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Muzaffarpur
  • A ₹520 crore sewerage treatment plant in Munger under Namami Gange
  • Urban infrastructure works worth ₹1,260 crore
  • A four-lane Bakhtiyarpur–Mokama stretch of NH-31 (₹1,900 crore)
  • The Bikramganj–Dumraon section of NH-120
  • The 8.15 km Aunta–Simaria bridge over the Ganga, linking Mokama to Begusarai

He also flagged off two new train services — the Amrit Bharat Express between Gaya Ji and Delhi, and the Buddhist Circuit Train connecting Vaishali (Bihar) to Koderma (Jharkhand). A symbolic Grih Pravesh was also held for 12,000 PM Awas Yojana (Gramin) beneficiaries.

According to BJP sources, this marks Modi’s 54th visit to Bihar and his seventh this year — reflecting the government’s focus on the state ahead of assembly polls.

Political Backdrop

PM Modi’s address comes as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi continues his Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar. After Bihar, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to West Bengal to inaugurate metro rail projects and lay road infrastructure foundations worth over ₹5,200 crore.

Metro Expansion in Kolkata

Later in the day, Modi will flag off services on three new metro corridors in Kolkata — the Green, Yellow, and Orange lines. These additions are expected to cut travel times significantly, including a direct 30-minute airport link on the Yellow Line, and increase metro capacity to over nine lakh passengers daily.
