Big Win for Abbas Ansari: High Court Sets Aside Conviction, MLA Status Reinstated

Abbas Ansari Gets Major Relief: Allahabad High Court Quashes Conviction, Restores MLA Status

Former MLA Abbas Ansari, son of mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has received a significant reprieve from the Allahabad High Court. The court accepted his petition and set aside the two-year jail sentence imposed by the MP/MLA Special Court in Mau. With this order, Ansari’s legislative status has been restored, eliminating the need for a by-election in the Mau Sadar assembly constituency.

Background of Disqualification
Abbas Ansari was convicted by the MP/MLA Special Court, Mau, on May 31, 2025, for making inflammatory speeches during the 2022 assembly elections. He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined Rs 3,000, which led to his disqualification from the Assembly on June 1, 2025.

After the District Judge of Mau rejected his appeal on July 5, Ansari approached the Allahabad High Court, challenging the earlier order. The High Court reserved its verdict on July 30.

Advocate Upendra Upadhyay represented Ansari, while Advocate General Ajay Kumar Mishra and Additional Advocate General MC Chaturvedi appeared for the Uttar Pradesh government, opposing any relief.

With today’s ruling, Abbas Ansari regains his MLA seat, marking a notable political development in Mau and a setback for those seeking a by-election in the constituency.
