Torrential Rains Hit Mumbai, Authorities Order Closure of Schools and Colleges

Heavy Rains Batter Mumbai, Schools Shut, Police Urge Caution

Mumbai remained on edge Monday as relentless rains triggered widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, and flight advisories, prompting the BMC to declare a holiday for schools.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Satara, Kolhapur, and Pune.

Police warned residents against non-essential travel, citing waterlogging, poor visibility, and congestion. “Please avoid non-essential travel, plan your commute with care, and step out only if necessary,” the Mumbai Police Commissioner said, urging citizens to dial emergency helplines when needed.

Airlines including Akasa Air and IndiGo advised passengers to factor in additional travel time to reach the airport, with traffic moving slowly on major routes like the Western Expressway.

On Sunday, the BMC recorded average rainfall of 97.88 mm across Mumbai, while suburbs received between 83–86 mm. The downpour caused six short circuits, 19 tree falls, and two wall collapse incidents, though no injuries were reported.

Heavy showers also led to train delays on Central Railway lines, though bus services were unaffected.

The city had already seen over 200 mm of rain in parts on Saturday, which inundated low-lying areas and triggered a landslide in Vikhroli that left two people dead and several injured.

With monsoon activity expected to continue, civic and police authorities remain on high alert.
