PM Modi, Putin Discuss Trump Meeting Amid Strain Over Oil Tariffs

PM Modi Thanks Putin for Briefing on Trump Meeting Amid Oil Tariff Strain

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for calling him and sharing details of his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska.

“Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska,” PM Modi wrote on X, reiterating that India supports a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

The Putin–Trump summit, held in Anchorage on August 15, focused on Ukraine but ended without a ceasefire deal. While Trump described the talks as “very productive,” he placed the onus on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European nations to move negotiations forward.

The call between Modi and Putin came just days after the US imposed 25% tariffs on select Indian goods and a further 25% penalty on purchases of Russian oil, with Trump accusing India of funding Moscow’s war effort through discounted oil imports.

India had earlier welcomed the Alaska summit, calling the leadership shown by Trump and Putin “highly commendable” in the pursuit of peace. The Ministry of External Affairs stressed that diplomacy and dialogue remain the only viable path, noting the global urgency to end Europe’s deadliest conflict since 1945.
