UP Floods: Ganga Breaches Danger Mark in Badaun, 11 Villages Inundated, Over 14,000 Stranded

The Ganga River in Badaun district, Uttar Pradesh, has been flowing above the danger mark for three consecutive days, reaching 162.51 meters on August 7, 2025, seven centimeters above the danger level of 162.44 meters at Kachhla. This has triggered severe flooding in 11 villages, affecting over 14,000 people. The district administration is closely monitoring the situation through flood control posts, and residents have begun seeking refuge in elevated areas as a precaution.

Floodwaters have inundated seven villages in Dataganj tehsil—Kamalaiyapur, Kadam Nagla, Dalpatnagla, Raipura, Jaswant Nagla, Premi Nagla, and Jata—and four in Sahaswan tehsil—Khagi Nagla, Veersahay Nagla, Bhamraulia, and Taufia Nagla. Water levels have reached three to four feet in these villages, submerging homes, soaking food supplies, clothing, and household items, and forcing residents to take shelter on rooftops. Livestock have been moved to higher ground, and the administration has deployed steamers for transportation and set up relief camps in village panchayat buildings and schools. However, most residents remain in their villages, living on rooftops.

In Raipura, villager Ganesh Kumar reported that floodwater has damaged wheat, fodder, clothes, and other household goods, with families spending nights on roofs. In Jaswant Nagla, Sudhakar noted that motorcycles, bedding, and other essentials were submerged, leaving families to cope on rooftops. Local MLA Rajeev Kumar Singh visited Jati and Jata villages in Usahat, assessing the situation and instructing the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to distribute relief materials, though floodwater has not yet reached the interiors of these villages.

Raipura’s village head, Rakesh Kashyap, stated that floodwater has persisted for two days, restricting movement. Livestock have been tied up in elevated areas outside the village, and fodder is being provided there. Relief supplies, including food, were distributed by the administration via steamers on Wednesday, two days after the flooding began. Villagers, including Balveer, Rajveer, Shree Krishna, Shree Ram, Gajaram, Dev Singh, Seetaram, Rajesh, and Mukesh, reported that their green vegetable crops were destroyed by the floodwater.

In Sahaswan’s four affected villages, floodwater has reached three to four feet, submerging roads and the lower parts of homes. Approximately 4,000 people are impacted, with some residents, fearing further rises in water levels, beginning to evacuate with essentials to safer locations. In Taufia Nagla, residents like Chandrapal, Rishipal, Dataram, Veerendra, Gyan Chandra, Ram Singh, and Atar Singh reported floodwater reaching their homes, though they have not yet vacated.

SDM Prempal Singh inspected the affected villages of Bhamraulia, Veersahay Nagla, Khagi Nagla, Girdhari Nagla, and Taufia Nagla, urging residents to relocate to safer areas due to the likelihood of worsening floods. He has established shelters in Sithaulia Pukhta, Kamanpur Bela, Jarifpur Garhia, and Aurangabad Tappa Jamni for flood-affected residents. SDM Singh confirmed that staff have been placed on high alert and will camp in the area to monitor conditions and provide assistance.

Villager Gyan Chandra from Veersahay Nagla highlighted the rapid erosion of the Ganga’s banks, which has brought floodwater into homes, forcing residents to flee. He criticized the administration for inadequate measures to prevent erosion, noting that earlier arrangements were insufficient, and the village is now fully inundated. Another villager, Gopal, echoed these concerns, stating that crops have been destroyed, and the administration has failed to implement robust solutions like geo-tubes despite repeated demands over the past four years.

Floodwater has also reached the Atena Ghat bridge in Usahat, threatening connectivity between eight villages across the Ganga and the tehsil headquarters. The road to Jata is completely submerged, isolating these villages. If water levels rise further, the route to Farrukhabad may also be cut off. Meanwhile, Tehsildar Sadar Deepak Kumar has ordered the removal of shops at Kachhla Ganga Ghat to mitigate risks.

Context from Additional Sources: According to the Central Water Commission, the Ganga was flowing above the danger mark in Badaun and other districts like Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Ghazipur, and Ballia as of August 5, 2025. Across Uttar Pradesh, 357 villages in 21 districts have been inundated, with 287 villages marooned and 31 facing erosion threats. The state has deployed 26 NDRF and SDRF teams, along with 31 PAC flood units, to conduct rescue and relief operations, with 347 shelter homes accommodating around 21,000 people.
